Two people were killed and one injured as pickup hit a CNG-run autorickshaw in Laxmipur. The incident took place at Tayyab Chowdhury Pole area of Tewariganj Union of Sadar Upazila at around 3:30 pm on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Abdus Sattar, a resident of Char Matua village in Tewarganj union, and Swapna Hossain, an autorickshaw driver, son of Rafiq Mikar of the same area. Sattar used to work in a local brick kiln. The injured was identified as Belal Hossain Majhi. He was sent to Noakhali General Hospital.
Witnesses said the autorickshaw driver Swapan was coming from Noakhali to Tewariganj Bazar with two passengers. The pickup was going towards Tewarganj market. Arriving at the scene, the pickup hit the autorickshaw leaving autorickshaw passenger Sattar and driver Swapan dead on the spot. Belal was rescued in critical condition and taken to Noakhali Hospital. The pickup driver fled immediately after the incident and could not be apprehended. Upon receiving the news, the police visited the spot. The pickup and autorickshaw involved in the accident are in the custody of the police.
Omar Farooq Ibn Hussain, chairman of Tewariganj Union Parishad, said, "I went to the spot after receiving the news."
Lakshmipur Sadar Model Police Station OC Jasim Uddin said police were sent after receiving the news. The bodies will be recovered and sent to the morgue of Sadar Hospital for autopsy. Legal action will be taken if any case filed by the families of the victims.
