A huge Catla fish weighing 18 kg 200 gm was caught on the Padma River in the net of fisherman Gurudev Haldar at Daulatdia ferry ghat area in Rajbari Goalanda on Saturday morning.
In the morning, Gurudev Haldar took the fish to Saku Mollah’s warehouse in Daulatdia for sale. Later, through an open auction, fish trader Chandu Mollah bought the fish at a price of Tk 25,480 – Tk 1,400 per kg.
During this, the crowd flocked to the Saku Mollah’s warehouse to see the huge Catla fish – which was tied to the pontoon of the ferry ghat with a rope.
“As soon as I came to the ghat area in the morning, I saw a huge Catla fish was being auctioned. There is a lot of demand for Padma’s Catla fish. As a result, I couldn’t resist and bought the fish with Tk 25,480 at Tk 1,400 per kg as the highest bidder in the auction,” said fish trader Chandu Mollah, adding that he is currently contacting big traders in Dhaka by phone to sell the fish. “I will sell it with a small profit.”
About this, District Fisheries Officer Roknuzzaman (Acting) said although there is a shortage of Hilsa in the Padma river this season, there are occasional big fishes of different species including domestic Rohu, Catla, Bagarius and helicopter catfish.
