At least 18 people were killed when a fire broke out at a martial arts school in central China. 16 more people were injured in the incident.
The fire broke out at the martial arts school located in rural Zhecheng county, Henan province on Friday morning.
China’s local media reported that most of the victims were boarding pupils aged 7-16.
“The fire had been extinguished,” said Zhecheng county government in a statement, informing that the cause of the blaze has been investigated.
According to Beijing Toutiao News, citing the local government staff, there were 34 boarding students on the premises when the fire broke out. The manager of the center was arrested by police, the report said.
Fatal blazes are common in China, where safety regulations are widely flouted and enforcement is often lax. More than two dozen people were killed in two blazes in Beijing's migrant neighborhoods in 2017.
