17 fishermen jailed for catching hilsa

A mobile court has sentenced to one year in jail to 17 fishermen for violating the ban on catching hilsa in Bhola. On Thursday evening, the UNO and mobile court executive Kamal Hossain gave the sentence.

The convicts are — Md. Samir, Md. Kalu Howlader, Abdul Mannan, Md. Ismail, Md. Al Amin, Md. Russell, Monir Hossain, Md. Hossain, Md. Hasan, Md. Atiq, Md. Arif, Noor Uddin, Md. Jasim, Mostafizur Rahman, Sohag, Md. Arif, Solaiman. 

Among them, the Md Samir and Kalu Howlader are the residents of Baufal upazila of Patuakhali district and remaining are the residents of different UP’s of Bhola Sadar upazila.

They were detained from Hajirhat, Elisha, Bhanti Canal, and Bhola Canal points on the Meghna-Tetulia river of Bhola from midnight to Thursday evening. At present, the administration has recovered about 3,000 meters of current nets.

Sadar Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Md.  Asaduzzaman said the fishery department, naval police, and the Coast Guard conducted the raid from Wednesday midnight to Thursday evening. The rescued current net was burned in a fire. The fisheries department will continue the operation till October 30 to protect the mother hilsa.
