The Met office in Rangpur recorded 433mm of rainfall in the district in 12 hours, since Saturday's 8:00 pm to 10:00am today, breaking all the records of the last 100 years of the district.
This nonstop rain led the many parts of the Rangpur city including 33 wards of the metropolis and most of the eight upazilas of the district under unprecedented waterlogging.
Mostafizur Rahman, Chief of Rangpur Meteorological Office, said, "The rainfall of Rangpur that recorded in 12 hours broke all the records of the last 100 years of the district. Around one and a half lakh people in hundreds of neighborhoods of the city have been stranded due to the heavy rainfall. The rainfall is likely to continue for the next two days. "
It is reported that due to the continuous rain, streets, lanes and by-lanes, houses of the city, the neighborhoods, Shayma Sundori and Cadi canal have been submerged in under knee to waist-deep water. The scarcity of drainage opportunity, people have been bound to make their movement on the water. Thousands of low-lying families have fled their homes and taken refuge in higher ground.
The Water Development Board and the Fire Service said the submerged Shayma Sundori canal cause of waterlogging. The drainage system will be activated when the canal water decreases.
Rangpur City Corporation Mayor Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa said all councilors have been instructed to stand by the water-logged city dwellers and eliminate waterlogging by draining water quickly.
