12 to die for killing lawyer’s assistant

A tribunal has sentenced 12 accused to death for killing Mubarak Hossain Bhuiyan, an assistant of a Dhaka Judge Court lawyer. 

On Monday, Dhaka-3 Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Md Monir Kamal handed down the verdict.   

The death awardees are -  Md. Mahbubur Rahman Bhuiyan alias Mahbub, Md. Mozammel Haque alias Badal Bhuiyan, Afzal Bhuiyan, Emdadul Haque alias Sikrit Bhuiyan, Nayan Bhuiyan, Dholan Bhuiyan alias Dhulo, Ruhul Amin, Chikan Mia, Sultana Akhter, Delwar Hossain Dilip, Bidhan Sonnasi, and Nilufa Akhter.

Besides, it sentenced two others -Tasnima Akter and Shamim alias Foysal bin Ruhul - to one-year imprisonment each in the case.

Earlier on October 17, the court fixed today for declaring the verdict after hearing the arguments of the state and the accused in the case.

On August 22 in 2015, Mobarak was beaten to death over land disputes by the convicted accused near the grounds of Gothalia Government Primary School in Bajitpur Upazila of Kishoreganj. 

Later, the victim’s brother Advocate Md Mozammel Haque Bhuiyan filed a murder case against the now-convicted. On January 2, 2017, Bajitpur police station Inspector Moqbul Hossain Molla filed the charge sheet in the murder case. 

Mobarak Hossain Bhuiyan, 45, was the son of late Ishad Bhuiyan of Gothalia Bhuiyabari of Bajitpur Police Station of Kishoreganj district. He was a member of the Dhaka Lawyers’ Assistant Association and a founding member of the Mrittika Protibondhi Foundation.
