The court on Tuesday sentenced 10 people to death for killing Mazharul Islam alias Paltan, a shopkeeper of a drug store in Shialdhora Bazar in Nandail, Mymensingh.

Judge Abu Jafar Md Kamruzzaman of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 pronounced the verdict as the charges against the accused were proved.

Earlier on December 5, the court fixed December 24 for declaring the verdict after presenting the arguments of the state and the accused.

According to the complaint, Mazharul was killed at his drug store on February 28 or March 1, 2007, in the morning. After the murder, the accused tied his body with a bamboo pole and locked it in the shop. On the day of the incident, Mazharul’s sister Beauty Akhter filed a murder case with Nandail Police Station.

On January 31 next year, Nandail police inspector Jasim Uddin, investigating officer of the case, filed a charge sheet accusing 18 people. After the charge sheet was filed, one of the accused named Jabbar Mohari died. Later, the court acquitted Jabbar Mohri from the case and framed the charge against the 17 accused.

Of the 30 witnesses charged in the case, 20 gave testimony at different times.
