22 U-loops and 10 modern U-turns are being constructed at the initiative of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) to reduce traffic congestion in the capital. As a result, passengers do not have to be stuck for hours on any signal to go to Gazipur from Tejgaon Satarasta intersection.

According to experts, once the work of U-loop and U-turn is completed, the traffic congestion in the capital will be reduced a lot. The work is moving forward again after a slight slowdown due to the coronavirus epidemic. The work of the U-turns will also be completed this year.

DNCC is working as per the master plan to build 22 U-loops from Telipara adjacent to Joydebpur intersection in the capital to Tejgaon Satarasta intersection.

Former city mayor Anisul Haque started the project work. If this plan is implemented, traffic congestion in DNCC will be reduced by about 40 percent. For this, a U-loop model presented by engineer Kamrul Hasan was introduced experimentally on the Airport-Uttara road. In order to verify its effectiveness, various suggestions were taken from the concerned agencies, urban and transport experts including the Department of Roads and Highways, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Traffic), Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA). Later, it was decided to set up 22 U-loops on the 34-km road from Hatirjheel Satarasta to Gazipur Chowrasta.

Meanwhile, two types of U-loops are being constructed from Telipara adjacent to Joydebpur intersection to Tejgaon Satarasta road as per the model. Type-A is designed for large and medium vehicles and Type-B is designed for small vehicles. A minimum of 144-feet wide for ‘Type-A’ and 104-feet wide for ‘Type-B’ U-loops will be constructed. The distance from one U-loop to the other will be from 800 meters to a maximum of 3.2 kilometers.

According to the source, about 38 bighas of land is being used to make 22 U-loops. Of these, 31.25 bighas are for roads and highways, 1.61 bighas for railways and 1.63 bighas for civil aviation authority.

The DNCC said as the lands were vacant and no need to acquire, as a result, the concerned departments are allowing the city corporation to use these.

If these U-turns and U-loops are implemented, there will be no need to stop for a moment on the roads and highways. No need to be stuck on the signal for hours. Even signal light will not be needed, said DNCC Mayor Md. Atiqul Islam.

In this method, some changes have to be made at the intersection of multiple roads. Besides, a special type of U-turn has to be installed inside the road near the crossing, he also said, adding, “If this is implemented, there will be no more signals on the road.”

I went to inspect the work of the U-turns on August 11. The work of 10 U-turns will be completed by December 31 this year. The work of U-loops lost momentum due to the coronavirus epidemic. I hope I can overcome these problems quickly, said DNCC Mayor Md. Atiqul Islam.

Atiqul Islam said the plan for these works was taken in 2016. The work came to a halt with the death of former mayor Anisul Haque. “After I was elected for nine months, I had a commitment that this dream of Anisul Haque will be realized. It was one of his dreams,” he added.
